SOTA Equipment – updated

As many SOTA-enthusiasts, I’m continuously trying to improve weight, size and performance of my equipment. Over the last two to three years, the following configuration has crystallized for my SOTA activations:

1) For activations where weight doesn’t play the leading role,

… there are two antenna variants with almost no difference in weight:

  1. 22m End fed wire with L- Tuner (green winder)
  2. EFHW Dipole with UnUN 1 : 64 (orange winder)

… and two options for power supply:

  1. LiPo battery, total weight of the whole equipment is just below 3 kg.
  2. AGM battery, total weight just below 4 kg (still sometimes useful e.g. as backup)

The red throw-bag is optional and adds 250g to the total weight.

2.9 Ah Pb AGM battery or 2200mAh LiPo 3S with safe bag, power cable with power pole connector.
Pack bag (green) with 3 tent pegs, 3 x 6m guy rope and blue support plate 14mm (for guy wires), grey seat cushion and optional throw bag.
Wodden „station desk“ (2mm plywood),  writing board with log sheets, pencil with eraser, earbuds on winder, pack bag (yellow) with pencil sharpener and tape.

2) For alpine activations where the weight has to be as low as possible,

… the equipment has been reduced to the bare minimum. What is shown in the picture below weighs 1660 g. In most cases it is even possible to forego the single tent peg and the green pack bag with its content because there is almost always something to attach the antenna to. The total weight decreases then down to 1500g.
