DM/BW-147 – Gespaltener Fels – 1000m (3)

Abstract:

April 9th, 2020, 11:50 – 13:40 UTC
My third activation of Gespaltener Fels, this time with Marie’s debut using the training call sign DN3TU/p

Wx: sunny, few clouds approx. 18°C
Walking time: approx. 30 min. up/ 20 min. down
Ascent/ descent: approx. 120 vertical metres

Conditions on the higher bands were so-so with deep QSB. Some stations disappeared completely. 40m produced strong signals. 60m was loud but less QSOs than last time. k = 1, SFI = 70

Rig: KX3 / 10W, 2.9Ah AGM battery, Palm Pico Paddle
Ant: 22 m end fed wire with QRP L- Tuner as inverted L on a 6m- squid pole.

10 CW QSOs on 20m
12 CW QSOs on 30m
15 CW QSOs on 40m
9 CW QSOs on 60m
1 SSB QSO on 60m

How to get there?

There is a parking lot on the road from Balingen to Tieringen at „Lochenpass“.  From there, follow the gravel road to the west and later the track to the north up the hill.

Activation report:

To take advantage of the sunny weather, I wanted to do another activation before Easter. For the holidays I expected a lot of people on the hiking trails. I definitely wanted to avoid that.

Gespaltene Fels is a very attractive destination for families with children, as there are numerous wooden animal sculptures hidden along the hiking trail. Marie was once again enthusiastic and tried to find all the animals. In the following slide show you can see most of them.
The summit rather resembles a big sloping plateau. There is a great stone labyrinth waiting there – as if made for playing hide and seek with children.

When we arrived near the top, the first thing we did was unpacking lunch. After lunch we set up antenna and station together. Then I started working through the bands in descending order. On 20m and 30m strong QSB was present, as we had seen before.

The SSB portion of the 40m band was heavily occupied, so It was difficult finding a free frequency. For this reason I moved on to CW. The pile-up was large, as almost always. My impression was that most chasers could hear me well, which was confirmed by the good signal reports I rceived.

On 60m we achieved a single SSB- QSO after many CQ- calls (because of the weak mobile coverage I could not submit a cluster spot). This was the opportunity for Marie’s first QSO on shortwave under the training call DN3TU. It was advantageous in this context that there were no other callers and enough time for a relaxed conversation.
Afterwards I worked some more stations in CW, but not as many as from the last summit – apparently it was still too early and the absorption on 60m too high…

It was fun again. Thanks a lot for the calls!
