DM/BW-001 – Feldberg – 1493m

Abstract:

June 12th, 2020, 10:30 – 11:10 UTC
My first activation of Feldberg.

Wx: blue sky with no clouds at all, pleasant temperature
Walking time: approx. 60 minutes up, 0 minutes down as we took the chairlift
Ascent/ descent: approx 250 vertical metres

Rig: KX3 / 10W, 2.9Ah AGM battery, Palm Pico Paddle
Ant: 22 m end fed wire with QRP L- Tuner as inverted L on a 6m- squid pole.

Good condx on 40m for central EU with loud signals and a small pile- up.
30m was disappointing with lots of QRM from the transmitting stations nearby.
k = 1, SFI = 71

23 CW QSOs on 40m – 5 x S2S
3 CW QSOs on 30m – 1 x S2S

Highlight:
Magnificent view of the Swiss Alps: Eiger, Mönch Jungfrau,…

Lowlight:
Lots of QRM on 30m.

How to get there?

From Feldberg village take the chairlift or one of the trails to the summit.

Activation report:

Because of the large crowd at the chairlift we decided to ascend by foot. When we reached the top, we were rewarded with a fantastic view: The Swiss Alps could be seen in the south. At the summit we sat down in a meadow a bit aside. After a short lunch I set up station and antenna.

The activation started at 40 metres. Right after powering up my KX3 I heard OE6FEG/p and I stayed on his frequency to have the first S2S QSO. Directly after the QSO I heard „DL3TU pse 1 dwn“. Since I was planning to stay at 40 metres anyway, I looked for a free frequency a bit below and called QRZ? Then a short but intense pile-up began, in which S2S QSOs mixed in again and again. It was pure joy to work so many activators on other summits. Apparently many SOTA friends used this marvelous day for a mountain trip.

When the pileup dried up, I QSYed to 30 metres, but there I had quite strong QRM, probably from the surrounding radio facilities. Only three QSOs came through, then I gave up.
Since both families wanted to move on, I completed the activation after only 40 minutes and packed up. Since Feldberg is activated regularly, this was certainly justifiable.

The children didn’t want to go any further and wanted to take the chairlift down to the car park. I was supposed to accompany them, the rest of the group went walking.
Then our plans for the rest of the day were discussed: Our wives preferred to return to our appartments, while Martin (SWL) and I wanted to hike up Herzogenhorn together (I had originally planned to do this alone).

Conclusion:

  • Feldberg is very popular, but because of its size it is no problem to find a place to activate.
  • An unusually large number of S2S QSOs went into the log within a short time.

It was great fun again. Thanks for the QSOs!
