My first activation of Kapellenberg.
Wx: Cloudy, approx. -3°C no winds
Walking time: 15 min. up, 10 min. down
Ascent/ descent: approx. 90 vertical metres
4 QSOs on 20m CW
10 QSOs on 30m CW
12 QSOs on 40m CW
12 QSOs on 60m CW
Weight per QSO: approx. 70g
– A real winter activation with some snow. Spotted a group of roe deer.
How to get there?
From Pappelau follow the road to Sotzenhausen and further to Sotzenhausen-Weiler. I parked the car at the location marked with the red circle which wasn’t optimal. It would have been better to leave the car at the green circled location and walk a little further.
Kapellenberg is on my list already for some time, but I find it rather unattractive. So it had to wait until there was time left after visiting my father who lives not too far from it. This is also the reason why I arrived more than an hour later than originally planned: The visit at my father’s took longer than expected.
The ground was frozen and we had about 5 cm of snow. So it took a while to find a suitable spot for the activation. I preferred not to sit down on the cold ground. Finally I found a stump, tall enough to serve as a desk so I could operate standing in front of it.
The summit is completey wooded and – as often – signals on the higher bands were weak. The activation picked up pace on 40 metres but by then my feet were already getting cold. When I finally QSYed to 60 metres, also my fingers were fairly cold and numb. Furthermore I noticed that my brain worked even slower than usually, most likely due to the lack of food.
- Need to find something to keep my feet and fingers warm for at least one hour.
- No S2S-QSO due to the late start and the small number of activations during winter.
- Added a new parameter in the abstract: weight/ QSO. The expected figure lies in a range between 50 and 200 grams. The more QSOs I put in the log and the less weight I carry around, the smaller the figure will become. Note: I consider all equipment I wouldn’t carry around on a hike as „radio-equipment“. It consits of (but is not limitedd to): Radio, antenna, battery, ground sheet, insulating cushion etc.
