DM/BW-853 – Blankenhalde – 871m (2)

Abstract

June 12, 2021  09:00 – 13:30 UTC
My second activation of Blankenhalde, this time together with DC1SAF.

Wx: Sunny, few clouds, approx. 25°C, light winds
Walking time: almost zero – drive on location
Ascent/ descent: approx. few vertical metres

Rig: KX3 / 10W,  7.2Ah SLAB, Palm Mini Paddle, Belcom LS202E / 3W for VHF
Ant: EFHW dipole w/ QRP-L-Tuner as inverted L on a 10m squid pole, MFJ1714 for VHF

Condx seemed to be good. DC1SAF worked one station from NA on 20 metres.
k = 1, SFI = 77

12 QSOs on 2m FM, 11 x S2S
14 QSOs on 40m CW
12 QSOs on 60m CW, 7 x S2S
2   QSOs on 60m SSB, 1 x S2S

Highlight:
– First CW SOTA activation of DC1SAF
– Because of the HB9SOTA-weekend an incredible number of Swiss activators was QRV. Many of them could be worked on 2m FM with my old Belcom LS202E and about 3 watts output power.
– Great aerial views of the summit thanks to Fabian’s quadrocopter

Very lightweight SOTA microphone

I have been looking for an alternative to the rather bulky and heavy Elecraft MH3 handheld microphone for quite some time. Since I mainly operate CW, the solution could be somewhat improvised.
Inspired by an article about a very light microphone in the SOTAreflector, I started the following mini-project:

A headset from my Baofeng UV-5R was available, lying around unused. The aim was to replace its weird dual plug with a simple 3.5 mm stereo plug and change the wiring so that it could be used with the KX3. The tiny speaker I would simply trim as I’m already using earbuds for my activations.

Abstract

February 22, 2021
My second activation of Hoher Randen, BW-235, second activation of Schächer, BW-193 and third activation of Lindenberg, BW-193.

Wx: Sunny, temperature approx. 10°C in the morning to 15°C in the afternoon, light winds, few clouds.

Rig: KX3 / 10W, 2.2 Ah LiPo battery (3S) and  2.5 Ah Li-Ion battery (4S), Palm Mini Paddle
Ant: 42 ft (12.8m) random wire and trapped EFHW dipole as inverted Vee on several trees

Condx on the hogh bands seemed to be poor with k = 3, SFI = 11. The low bands were the work-horses.
