DM/BW-089 – Farrenberg – 820m VK/ZL – Europe SOTA S2S Party (2)

October 22, 2016: 6:25 – 8:30 UTC

Rig: K3 / 100W, Varta LA60 (60 Ah) AGM- battery, Begali „DXpedition“ paddle
Ant: Vertical End- fed Dipol on 12.5m GRP Pole

39 CW QSOs on 20m – first S2S- QSO with JA and VK 🙂

Well, this was fun! Initiated by Andrew, VK1AD, and Mike, 2E0YYY, more than 50 activators were QRV from summits all over the world for this event.

Because I wanted to be on the air at 8:30 local time I chose ‚Farrenberg‘, the summit closest to my home with a clear top. It is a ‚drive- on‘ location and allowed me to carry a big enough battery to run high power. Here is a phantastic photo of the summit. The airfield occupies most of it.

The top of Farrenberg is perfectly flat. There is a glider airfield on it.

During the week I was a bit sceptical about the weather. But the forecast improved as the S2S Party drew nearer. Finally we had a cloudy night without rain and the temperature remained well above 0°C. Shortly after sunrise the sky cleared up and sunshine made this trip to DM/BW-089 most enjoyable.

I set up the antenna at the eastern rim anticipating the long path to VK/ ZL being down the runway and thus free of trees. Looking at the map back home revealed that the runway is rather 290° and the path to Down Under led a bit further south – through the forest only some 30m away 😦 I don’t know if it had any impact but next time I’ll move the antenna a bit further north.

Vertical 20m EFHW- Dipole on a 12.5m fiberglass- mast.

20m was open right from the start thus I decided to stay with it and did not QSY. The band was very noisy at times making it hard to copy the weaker signals. But when the noise disappeared it was possible to read signals which had traveled some 24.000km around the globe and had originated from 5 Watt transceivers – awesome!

All in all it was loads of fun. There was much more activity than usual: Many chasers, lots of EU S2S and some nice DX, some even S2S:
JA1VRY, JP3DGT/3 on JA/OS-012
VK3CAT, VK5CZ, VK2AOH on VK2/CT-003, VK1DA on VK2/ST-044, VK3ARH on VK3/VC-018.
Missed VK2IO on VK2/SY-002. Due to the many stations calling him I decided to try it a bit later but then Gerard was gone.

Thanks Andrew, VK1AD, and Mike, 2E0YYY, for this great idea! I’m still buzzing with excitement.

Thanks for all the QSOs!
