My first activation of Hohenstaufen.
Wx: hazy, few clouds approx. 22°C
Walking time: approx. 30 min. up/ 20 min. down
Ascent/ descent: approx. 140 vertical metres
Conditions on 20m were really good with four US- stations in the log. 30m and 40m were slow with few QSOs. 60m was good with loud signals from all over Europe. k = 0, SFI = 68
Rig: KX3 / 10W, 2.9Ah AGM battery, Palm Pico Paddle
Ant: 22 m end fed wire with QRP L- Tuner as inverted L on a 6m- squid pole.
8 CW QSOs on 20m
3 CW QSOs on 30m
5 CW QSOs on 40m
14 CW QSOs on 60m
How to get there?
There is a parking lot next to the youth hostel in Hohenstaufen. From there, follow the paved road up the hill.
Hohenstaufen is one of the „Drei Kaiserberge“ (Link). Klick on the picture to enlarge…
The last summit of the day was Hohenstaufen. I didn’t have planned for it because I wasn’t sure how long it would take to activate the other SOTA references. But in the end there was enough time. It was advantageous that Hohenstaufen was on the way back.
When I reached the summit there were – as expected – many people around. After a while I found a suitable place for the activation, facing northwest. This surely helped working North America again. 20m was wide open at that time. 60m was reliable as well and brought many loud European stations.
During teardown I had a very nice conversation with some passers-by. They were impressed by the possibilities that amateur radio offers and found the idea of network-independent communication very interesting, especially in these strange times.
When everything was packed up, I headed back home and enjoyed the long awaited Weissbier. It was a great day with lots of impressions. At the end of the day one hundred QSO were in the log 🙂
- Because of the short-term change of plan (activating a fourth summit), I was spotted on SOTAwatch on DM/BW661 again. For future activations, I’ll have to change my alerts if there is a change in plan, or just alert with wild card from the beginning.
- very good condx into NA on 20m.
- Four summits and 100 QSOs in one day is feasible.
It was fun again. Thanks a lot for the calls!
